Ohio’s Abandoned Gas Station (AGS) Cleanup Grant Program was developed in 2016 by the Ohio Development Services Agency in conjunction with the Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulation (BUSTR) and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Between 2016 and the end of 2019, over one hundred grants have been awarded. To qualify, the site must be a former gas station, have no other use afterwards, be vacant, and have a confirmed BUSTR Class C Release. A Class C Release means that there is a documented release, but there is no viable responsible party to clean it up. Even if the underground storage tanks were previously removed, the property may still be eligible for grant funding.

Eligible applicants can receive up to $100,000 for assessment activities and $500,000 for cleanup/remediation activities, totaling $600,000 per site in funding through the Ohio AGS Cleanup Grant Program.
